The world of kitchen tools is full of all shapes and sizes. The question is, what’s the biggest knife in the world? On this page, we’ll be exploring some of the largest knife types out there.
We’ll cover kitchen tools, group projects, as well as some novelty examples along the way. The reality is that it’s harder to define “world’s largest knife” than you might expect.
The Biggest Kitchen Knife – Maguro Bōchō
Before exploring some of the more novel cases out there, let’s first discuss the most salient example – the maguro bōchō kitchen knife. This Japanese tool is remarkably long and incredibly specialized.
Maguro bōchō knives are steeped in history and are associated with a rich heritage of ceremony and prestige.
They’re primarily used to filet tuna and other fish from the ocean. Their sizable length makes them perfect for cutting entire fish in a single movement. While they may look like swords, they’re most useful in the kitchen, not as a weapon!
We think this example from Yoshiro is fantastic. It features an exceptionally sharp single edge and a rare #2 steel.
The World’s Largest Penknife
Moving away from the kitchen, let’s focus on a more practical everyday knife – the penknife. According to Guiness World Records, the world’s largest penknife was produced by the folks at Red Hill Cutlery in Radcliff, Kentucky, USA, on the 9th of January 2019.
A member of the family-owned Red Hill Cutlery business, Jason Basham, decided to create something that would put the company name in the history books. The result is a staggering 10.52 m long.
It’s estimated that the project cost between $55-75,000 and took countless hours to accomplish. The resulting tourism and notoriety has surely been worth it in the end!
Biggest Bowie Knife in the World
The town of Bowie, Texas, is home to the largest Bowie knife (a type of fighting knife) in the world. It was created by a talented group of engineers and builders from the area led by the tenacious Bob Hadley. The monument-cum-knife was certified by Guinness World Records in 2016 as the biggest of its kind.
The town of Bowie takes its name from the infamous fighter and pioneer James Bowie, who visited Texas in the 19th century. Bowie was known for his bravery and iconic fighting knife that won him great esteem.
